Here’s an overview of the browse feature I’m working on for GNOME Do. As you might expect, it works a lot like Quicksilver’s browse mode, except it’s not as good (yet!). One minor improvement over Quicksilver is that in the case of the Rhythmbox addin, albums and artists are first-order items in Do’s universe, which means I can search for them directly rather than having to take the intermediate step of typing “browse ar(tists)” or “browse al(bums),” and then typing the name of the artist or album I want to listen to. Although this is a small detail, it makes a world of difference if you listen to a lot of music.
Any items Do knows about can have child items that are accessed by selecting an item and pressing the right-arrow key. For example, a Radiohead album item from Rhythmbox has all of my Radiohead albums as children. I begin a search for music by Radiohead by typing “rad”:

Pressing the right-arrow key shows the children of the Radiohead item, which happen to be all the Radiohead albums I have on my computer:

Selecting an album and pressing the right-arrow key shows me the individual songs in each album, letting me play them or add them to my play queue:

Typing “rh” brings up Rhythmbox. I can press enter to launch Rhythmbox, or explore its children with the arrow keys (see the following picture):

Here are some of the items associated with Rhythmbox that show up when I press the right-arrow key after selecting the Rhythmbox application item (above). There are basic controls like play, pause, and show current track. I can also browse artists and albums:

Below, you can I’ve selected the “Browse Artists” child of Rhythmbox and pressed the right-arrow key. Now I can search through all my Rhythmbox music organized by artist, without even opening Rhythmbox. I can play any of this music, and GNOME Do will launch Rhythmbox and tell it to play the music I’ve chosen in the background:

Hi
i added a comment in the gnome do thread in ubuntu forums but didnt get a reply (probably lost in the Huge thread ;-).
the integratrion with music is really awesome! Any plans to add support for us Amarok users?
thx
Zeltak
Until there’s an Amarok plugin, I suggest you just install Rhythmbox and have it import all of your music. You don’t need to switch to Rhythmbox or anything, but when you use Do’s music browsing feature, it really doesn’t matter which music player you use because it just runs in the background.
This is very cool! I had previously commented that I was planning on trying Gnome Do (and was very excited to), and I am finally going to be reformatting tonight and I will be sure to give it a test!
Can’t wait for this to be released, I listen to a *lot* of music :)
This feature is released (but not complete! you can only browse into items, not back out!) or should be by the end of Thanksgiving.
Hey Dave,
Just wanted to let you know that I finally got a chance to try Gnome Do (with Compiz animations). It is absolutely fantastic. The version in the Gutsy repos didn’t have the whole browse feature. (I didn’t really feel brave enough to try SVN.) Even still, I am really excited about this feature. I use Rhythmbox and finding a band, song, or a album and playing it from Do would be *really* nice!
Thanks for all of your hard work.
Hey, I install Do and the addin’s, but I can’t seem to get them working… thoughts?
You can get help with you problem here: https://answers.launchpad.net/gc/
As far as addins not working, every time someone has thought the addins were not working, it turned out that they didn’t have the correct dependencies or they simply misunderstood what the addins do.
I just found about this little gem called Gnome Do and I’m in love with it! This browsing feature is priceless.
I just wish there was a similar integration with Exaile :( I know you probably have another priorities now, but could you add this request to your to-do list? Pretty pretty please? :)
One more vote for Amarok!
(There’s a ton of good music players for Ubuntu, but I found Amarok to beat them out because of how well it scanned & organized my collection, plus I like how it does the internet radio)
Actually, a question – any faster way of launching gnome do other than alt+f2, “gnome-do”?
Vadim: https://answers.launchpad.net/gc/+question/17619
I don’t have a Windows key :(
(I’m not kidding. I’m on a ThinkPad T40).
How can I change the keybinding then?
Hey dude,
Here’s a dumb question: how are you writing the program with what looks like C#? Am I missing something?
Also for the dude above me: go to http://www.thinkwiki.org and look for your laptop and distro.
Great program! I use Find and Run Robot at work (Windows) and have been searching for something similar to use at home. Looking forward to seeing further development!
what are it’s hotkeys?
It is C# – the launchpad entry (“Languages: C#”) says so.
And you can use Mono for that, I believe.
Oh okay, thanks Vadim P. I didnt know you could do that. Also for Vadim P., go here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/gc/+question/19408
That tells you how to directly modify to hot key. I changed mine to
<Ctrl>space
Using +Spacebar to access it (Alt+Space gives you the right click mouse menu). It’s much easier than modifiying your Caps Lock to be Super.
PS Great job Dave Siegel! Your app is great, I missed Launchy on Ubuntu.
Hi Dave,
Gnome-Do is so cool that I couldn’t resist writing an Addin for Banshee.
http://blog.zaft.be/2007/12/gnome-do-banshee-goodness.html
Actually, I’m a pretty crappy developer but it was quite easy to write (thanks to the Rhythbox Addin and good MonoDevelop integration).
It would be really great to have some repository somewhere to put such plugins.
Keep your hard work :)
